Floating Islands

Sterling ownes one, and he's not the only one. A relic of pre-Incident times, floating islands (sometimes called floating cities) come in all sizes from the size of a city block, to around 1000 square feet.

Before the Incident, the uber rich often bought islands, both the natural kind and artificial ones. When they decided that islands in the sea were not enough, floating islands were developed. These islands were few and far between, but they were launched at the behest of the wealthy. Some of them are extremely large (a city block or bigger), while others are small and only hold a house and perhaps a garden. The richer someone was, the larger their island, and they quickly became a status symbol with size reflecting the amount of wealth.

While items like yachts and expansive houses and mansions still showed off someone's financial status, the floating islands became even more important to them. There were many manufactured that had not been purchased yet as well as some in production at the time of the Incident. This led to many being abandoned or raiders taking hold of them.

After the Incident, these floating islands move across the world as one of the few ways to get across the oceans to another continent. Since they run on prototype engines, though, they require constant maintenance. Some owners who have technologically adept people on their island have had massive upgrades with their islands. Some have crashed and spawned small communities with makeshift walls around them, or none at all, depending only on Tanner lights to keep them safe.

Sterling's Floating Island

Sterling Bonaventure owns a floating island that his wealthy parents had purchased for him before the Incident. Since then, Sterling has lived exclusively on the island. He often takes passengers from place to place, and his lovers inhabit the cabins on the island, at least those that live there full time. Those that don't, he visits frequently, so the island is always on the move. Sterling does his best to help those in need, and has often taken time to go down and intervene in something he feels he can help with. As a trained martial artist, he is able to take care of himself, and some of his lovers like Lilah go down with him.

Sterling's Island

Upper Deck:
Garden and Orchard Deck

The Upper deck of the island features gardens, berry bushes, orchards, and a fishing pond. This is where most of the food consumed on the island comes from with the exception of meat, which is made through a meat replication machine in the commercial kitchen on the lower deck. The deck is covered with a force shield that protects the plants but is permeable enough to let rain water through at a gentle rain.

Main Deck:
Living and Communal Spaces Deck

The main deck features the cabins that people can live in. Each cabin has two small bedrooms, a living area, a small kitchen for snack items and light meals, and a two person dining table. The majority of the time, residents cook in the communal kitchen and dine together in the dining hall. It also features a swimming pool and flower garden with a stone fountain. There is also a gym, a community center with games of all kinds, and offices with a den in the front to allow someone to relax there as well. The underside of the upper deck is lit with sun-lights. These lights change to reflect the natural light of the day around them. They can be adjusted to different light levels at any time if necessary.

Lower Deck:
Storage, Platform Entrance, and Engine Deck

The heart of the island is in the lower deck. With massive storage areas for the kitchen and other larger items that the residents need to put away. It contains the engine, the large engine room, and has the entrance from the platforms that can be sent to the ground so the island doesn't have to land. The commercial kitchen contains the larger kitchen items, and there are smaller storage rooms for each resident of the island.
