The Nexus: Sentient Guardian of the Universe

The most important thing about the Nexus is the fact it is intentional and intelligent. As a sentient being, it makes adjustments to the membrane that surrounds the realms and works with spacetime. While difficult to envision in a two-dimensional image, the idea is that the Nexus is around and between the realms, keeping them in their individual orbits.

Earth is the anchor point. It is the source of all realms, which they all reflect. Each realm has striking similarities to Earth, and that is simply because they are reflections of Earth. The structure, the geography, even though it may be altered, is originally the same as Earth. Many things that exist on one exist on the other, and some things that no longer exist on Earth may exist on another realm.

The Nexus, though, keeps the other four realms in their individual orbits, and while they pass near Earth, they never collide with it or with each other. It is living and reactive to whatever happens around it, and the purpose is to keep things in balance. It isn’t about law and order necessarily; it is about balancing the realms with each other and against the anchor of Earth.

When humans delve into this substrate, they are actually finding the membrane that separates the Nexus from the realms, leaving it an independent entity. This membrane is reactive and flows naturally. When the scientists attempt to use resonance and harmonics to flatten this membrane, it becomes stiff and brittle, and able to tear. This is essentially what happened when the QEBS powered on. It attempted to make it one resonance, and in doing so limited the movement and the ability to react to natural changes in the universe.

The Nexus attempted to stop contamination between the realms as one of its main directives. Doing this, it shut down the breaches going from Earth to the other realms, but it was not strong enough to stop the breaches from other realms entering Earth. Then, it did the only thing it could possibly do.

It created an entity that could fix what happened—one built of all the realms and the Nexus itself.
