Ignored Warnings
The implosion of the QEBS had warnings other than Finley's dire ancient ones. No, the scientists saw them, and discounted them as not important to the project. They believed there were other explanations that could be the reason for the various things that came up. However, they were very wrong, and only Finley remained skeptical of them.
Warnings Dismissed
Finley MacMillan saw each one and attempted to convince the others something was wrong in the situation. No one listened, preferring their own dismissive explanation for each of the warnings. Finley tried to explain that with the ancient warnings and these new ones, something would go wrong.
He, of course, was right.
The First Warning: Harmonic Anomoly
Early tests showed there was some sort of anomaly which happened. The tests would emit harmonics at the substrate, and there was a return harmonic that echoed the test harmonic, but slightly different. The engineers thought it was simply feedback noise created by an imperfect system, and they set about trying to make it go away by tweaking things. Eventually, the harmonics stopped returning, and they thought they had simply fixed the emitters. This was actually the membrane of the Nexus reacting to the interference the harmonics were causing. It was trying to rebalance itself the only way it knew how. It never affected energy output, therefore it was marked non-critical and later when it stopped as fixed.
The Second Warning: Substrate Pulse
During calibrations, an event happened that should have caused the team to pause. The substrate emitted a pulse that knocked out sensors for 0.9 seconds. They wrote it off as a simple random quantum fluctuation in the substrate because it did not repeat in the next calibration tests. The Nexus was actually attempting to push the harmonic signature away.
The Third Warning: Repeating Patterns
The quantum tomography showed repeating geometric patterns that were too structured to be random noise. They were distinct and clearly visible in the tomography data. Engineers believed it was a software artifact and not related to the substrate because the pattern vanished when the AI went through the data and cleaned it up. In reality, they were seeing the harmonic geometry of the membrane.
The Fourth Warning: Conflicting Readings
During one incident, the predictive AI showed a dialectic response on the final harmonic configuration. It called it “highly unstable” and “maximally efficient” at the same time. Since the top priority was efficiency, they dismissed it as incomplete training data. The AI had found the natural alignment frequency of the Nexus.
The Fifth Warning: Spacetime Elasticity
A strange event that several of the team took a little more seriously was that local spacetime around their facility was showing elasticity. Objects started weighing slightly less. The difference was barely discernable, but once pointed out, they measured weights, and found them to be 50 grams off what they should be. They believe this effect would make good research for future applications of the technology, and they believed it was nothing but a harmless side effect of the spatial compression. Here is where the membrane began to thin.
The Sixth Warning: Animal Activity
All around the area, animals began to avoid the area. Even birds would not fly over it. This extended for about a mile radius around the facility, and only Finley noted this and worried over it. When he brought it up, the others said animals could hear construction noise and that was driving them away. Honestly, no one really cared about it except Finley, and they did not understand that these animals were sensing the harmonic disturbance.
The Seventh Warning: Harmonic Signature
One of the final warning signs that was ignored was the facility’s harmonic signature drifted toward one particular frequency. This occurred even when the emitters were not online. This “creeping” was dismissed as residual energy in the system after it was taken offline, and they resolved to investigate the viability of using it in some way to deal with power loss situations. It didn’t affect operations, and no one had any idea the Nexus was trying to pull the facility into alignment with its harmonics.
